About the webinar

In past months, everyone in Australia has become aware that there has been one consistent in our lives – the need to adapt to change.

We have experienced drought, bushfires and now COVID-19.

For families, children and young people, this change has been unparalleled in their lifetime.

Most of you will be classified as essential workers, who have continued in your roles by implementing advice from various health authorities across Australia. You will now be carrying out these roles while witnessing the impact, on some of the children, young people and families in your care. This includes the loss of income, loss of family home, adjusting to not seeing loved ones, being socially isolated, learning from home, serious illness, job losses, financial strain, working from home and loss or closure of places of community connection.

All of us have felt anxiety about what we should do and how we should behave.

It is certainly not a stretch to consider ourselves a society who have been traumatised by drought, bushfires, COVID-19 and global economic impacts with all the fear, concern and anxiety it is creating for each one of us.

Our presentation will cover:

  • Researched based scientific information on how to best understand how change impacts us physically, emotionally and cognitively.
  • A developmental and cumulative trauma lens to assist with understanding how this can be experienced differently according to age, support networks and previous exposure to trauma.
  • Evidence based interventions and tools to determine how we can best support children, young people, families and ourselves to work with the impact of such widespread traumatic experiences, in order to weather these unprecedented times of change.
  • Using all of this information to rebuild our communities to carry hope, connection and growth.

About the speaker

Heather Irvine-Rundle, clinical psychologist and director of The READ Clinic

Heather is a senior clinical psychologist and the director of The Read Clinic, which is one of the largest psychology practises in Australia. As well as practising in Australia, Heather has also spent three years in the UK working with some of the most deprived families in Liverpool and London. She also led a service providing advice and consultations on mental health to all the schools in the South London area.

As well as practicing for 19 years Heather has also found time to become a published author with her latest book Hello Baby. Heather speaks regularly on local ABC radio, has appeared on a number of television shows including 60 Minutes, and writes regular articles for print and digital media.
